Hugh McManus, a Wilmington lawyer, was disbarred on April 12, 2016, for professional misconduct. The Disciplinary Hearing Commission of the NC State Bar found that McManus committed misconduct for failing to make disbursements to/on behalf of his clients’ estates (violating Rule 1.15-2(m)), making disbursements to himself from entrusted funds from his clients’ trust accounts (violating Rule 1.15-2(j)), and misappropriating entrusted funds of his clients and falsely representing to them he was delaying disbursements thereby committing a criminal act (violating Rules 8.4(b)&(c)).  Furthermore, McManus failed to properly conduct monthly/quarterly reconciliations of his trust account, failed to maintain client ledgers for entrusted funds, and failed to include client attributions and provide clients with written accounting of all receipts in violation of Rule 1.15-3.
